Free AI SEO Tools: What “Free” Actually Buys You

Free AI SEO Tools: What “Free” Actually Buys You

Every list of free AI SEO tools has the same problem. It counts three completely different things as “free” — software that is genuinely free forever, software with a ceiling deliberately placed just below where a real business needs it, and a trial wearing a free plan’s clothing — and then ranks them together as though the distinction does not matter. It matters more than any feature comparison, because it determines whether you are building a free stack or scheduling a purchase you have not budgeted for.

So this is the audit rather than the list. What is genuinely free and stays free. Exactly where each ceiling sits, in the vendors’ own published numbers. And the uncomfortable finding at the end: for the specific job most people mean when they search for free AI SEO tools — finding out whether your brand shows up in AI answers — there is almost no free tier in the commercial market at all, and the best free option comes from Google.

The three kinds of free

Sort every tool you are considering into one of these before you evaluate a single feature.

Free because you are the data. First-party platform tools — Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, Google Analytics, Google Business Profile. The platform gives you your own performance data at no charge because a site owner who can see problems fixes them, and a fixed site is a better result for the platform. These have no meaningful ceiling and no upgrade path, because there is nothing to sell you.

Free as a lead magnet. The commercial vendors’ free tiers. These are marketing spend. The ceiling is not a technical constraint; it is a product decision, set with real care at the point where a business that has genuine need crosses it. This is not a criticism — it is a rational, honest trade, and some of these free tiers are extremely generous. But you should read the limit as a sales forecast rather than an accident.

Free as a countdown. A trial. Nothing wrong with it, except when the pricing page calls it a free plan. The AI visibility category is the worst offender here.

Tier one: genuinely free, and better than it was six months ago

Start here, because this layer got materially stronger in 2026 and most “free tools” articles have not caught up.

Search Console, including the new generative AI report

Google Search Console has always been the single most valuable free tool in SEO, and it now does something directly relevant to AI search. It carries a Generative AI performance report covering AI Overviews and AI Mode — first-party data about your visibility in Google’s generative surfaces, at no cost.

What is genuinely useful about it: it is Google’s own count, not a third-party sample. In a market where every commercial AI visibility tool works by asking an AI model questions and recording the answers, a direct measurement from the platform is a different class of evidence.

What it does not do, and you should know before you build a report on it:

  • Impressions only. Google defines the metric as how many times links to your site were shown to a user in a generative AI feature. There are no clicks in this report.
  • No query data at all. You get pages, countries, devices and dates. You do not get the questions.
  • No split between AI Overviews and AI Mode. They are reported together.
  • It is still rolling out. Google states plainly that not all properties have access yet.
  • It excludes Search Labs experiments and Discover, which has its own report.

One related point that trips people up in the main Performance report: appearances in AI features are folded into the Web search type alongside ordinary results, and cannot be separated out there. So if your organic clicks have moved and you want to know how much of that is AI-related, the standard report will not tell you. That structural limitation is worth understanding before you spend money trying to buy your way around it — our guide to tracking AI search traffic in Singapore covers how to assemble a workable picture from what is available.

The rest of the genuinely free layer

Bing Webmaster Tools is free and worth having for a reason specific to this topic: Microsoft Copilot draws on Bing’s index, so Bing-side indexing problems have a downstream effect that Google’s tools will never show you. Google Analytics 4 is free at the volumes any Singapore SME will reach, and its channel grouping now recognises AI assistant referrals natively. Google Business Profile is free and remains the highest-leverage single asset for local visibility — relevant here because AI answers to local questions lean heavily on it.

Then there are the assistants themselves. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity all have free tiers, and for SEO work they are legitimately useful — drafting, classifying, summarising, first-pass analysis. That is a different job from AI visibility, and it is worth keeping the two separate in your head. Using AI to do SEO work and monitoring whether AI mentions you are unrelated problems that happen to share a buzzword.

Tier two: where the freemium ceilings actually sit

These are the published limits from each vendor’s own pages, as at August 2026. This is the table most “free tools” articles leave out, and it is the only part that determines whether a free tier will work for you.

Tool What free gives you The hard ceiling What it costs to lift
Ahrefs Webmaster Tools Site Audit, Site Explorer and Web Analytics for websites you verify ownership of; unlimited verified sites 5,000 crawl credits per month per project; 1,000 backlinks and keywords visible at once; 1 AI content doc per month; cannot analyse sites you do not own Lite from US$129/mo
Screaming Frog SEO Spider Every listed feature — scheduling, configuration, saved crawls, JavaScript rendering, crawl comparison, custom extraction, GA and Search Console integration, OpenAI and Gemini integration 500 URLs per crawl £199/year, dropping to £169 at 20+ licences
Semrush free account 1 demo project; access across the toolset; some AI visibility features 10 reports per day, total SEO plan from US$139/mo; the AI-inclusive Starter plan from US$199/mo
Search Console / GA4 / Bing Webmaster Tools Your own first-party performance, index and traffic data No commercial ceiling — limits are structural (no query data in the generative AI report, no AI-surface split in the main one) Not applicable; there is no paid tier

Two of these deserve comment because they behave very differently from the pattern.

Screaming Frog is unusually honest. Its own comparison table shows the free and paid versions with identical feature sets — scheduling, custom extraction, JavaScript rendering, crawl comparison, the lot. The single difference is the 500-URL crawl limit. There is no crippled free version here; there is a full tool with a size cap. For a Singapore business with a 40-page brochure site, the free version is not a taster, it is the product. For a 3,000-SKU e-commerce site, it is unusable, and the £199 is a rounding error against the value.

Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is the most generous free tier in the category, with one decisive catch. Five thousand crawl credits a month and real backlink data for your own domain is a serious amount of free software. The catch is that it only works for sites you have verified. You cannot look at a competitor. Since roughly half the practical value of a backlink tool is seeing what someone else is doing, this ceiling is placed precisely where the commercial motive is — and, again, that is a legitimate trade, not a trick.

Where the free ceiling sits, against real site sizes Published vendor limits, August 2026. Site sizes are typical Singapore SME shapes. 20 pages 60 pages 300 pages 1,200 pages 5,000 pages brochure services content site multilingual e-commerce Screaming Frog free: 500 URLs Every other feature identical to the paid version. Fine for a brochure or services site. Useless above it. Ahrefs free: 5,000 crawl credits/mo Generous — but verified sites only. No competitors. Independent of site size Semrush free account: 10 reports per day, in total, across every tool. A single competitive research session will exhaust it before lunch.
Freemium ceilings are set deliberately: just above a small brochure or services site, and just below a site with enough scale to have a budget.

Tier three: the free tier that mostly does not exist

Here is the finding that matters most, and it is the reason this article exists rather than another roundup.

For AI visibility monitoring specifically — tracking whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot or AI Overviews mention your brand — the commercial market has essentially no free tier. It has trials.

Otterly’s pricing page offers a free trial and states plainly that it is a trial; the cheapest standing plan is Lite at US$29 a month for 15 tracked prompts. Profound’s entry plan is US$99 a month billed yearly, and at that price it tracks one engine — ChatGPT — with a single seat. Ahrefs bundles five tracked prompts on its US$129 Lite plan and sells its real AI visibility product, Brand Radar AI, separately from around US$199 a month. Semrush’s AI-inclusive Starter plan begins at US$199 a month.

This is not vendors being greedy. Every one of these products works by repeatedly querying commercial AI models, which costs the vendor money per check. There is no zero-marginal-cost version to give away. A free tier that meaningfully sampled AI answers would lose money on every user, which is exactly why nobody offers one.

Which leaves two genuinely free options, and both are worth doing.

Four jobs, and whether free actually covers them The paywall falls in a very specific place. The job Free coverage What free gets you Crawling & technical audit FULLY COVERED Search Console + Screaming Frog (to 500 URLs, full feature set) Traffic & conversion FULLY COVERED GA4 + Search Console. No paid tier exists to want. Keyword & backlink research PARTIAL Your own sites, yes. Competitors, no — that is the paywall. AI visibility monitoring NO FREE TIER Trials only. Substitutes: the free GSC report + a manual check.
Free covers the technical and measurement layers completely. It stops at competitor research, and it stops hard at AI visibility.

The free method that actually works: a written monthly prompt check

This is not a workaround for people who cannot afford a tool. Done properly it is a genuinely useful practice, and plenty of teams paying US$400 a month would learn more from doing this once than from another dashboard.

  1. Write 10 to 15 real buyer questions. Not your brand name — the questions someone asks before they know you exist. “Best SEO agency in Singapore for B2B,” “how much does a corporate video cost in Singapore,” “PSG pre-approved digital marketing vendors.” Keep the list fixed; a changing list cannot show a trend.
  2. Pick the assistants your buyers plausibly use. In Singapore that must include Google’s AI surfaces, given Google holds roughly 93% of local search. ChatGPT alone is the wrong sample here.
  3. Run them the same way each month. Logged out, no chat history, same market. This does not eliminate variation, but it removes the personalisation that would otherwise flatter you.
  4. Record four things per prompt: were you mentioned, were you cited with a link, which competitors appeared, and which sources the answer leaned on.
  5. Keep it in one spreadsheet, dated. The value is entirely in the comparison to last month.

The caveat you must state to anyone you show it to. AI answers are non-deterministic and personalised. Ask the same question twice and you can get different answers; ask from a different account and you certainly can. A sample of 10 to 15 prompts run once a month is direction, not measurement. It will reliably tell you “we are invisible for our core category” or “we appear consistently.” It will not reliably tell you that visibility rose 12% since June. Anyone presenting that second kind of claim from a small manual sample is over-reading their data. If you need real measurement, that is precisely what the paid tools are selling, and it is a reasonable thing to buy.

Our prompt library is a useful starting point for building the list, and the guide to showing up in AI Overviews covers what to do once the check tells you something bad.

When free stops being enough

Three triggers, in the order they usually arrive.

Your site outgrows the crawl ceiling. The moment you pass 500 URLs, Screaming Frog free stops being a full audit and becomes a partial one — and a partial crawl of a large site is worse than useless, because it looks complete. This is the cheapest ceiling to lift and the one most worth lifting promptly.

You need to see competitors. Free first-party tools show you your own site perfectly and everyone else’s not at all. If the question you keep failing to answer starts with “why are they ranking and we aren’t,” you have hit the boundary that free is designed to enforce.

Someone starts asking for AI visibility on a monthly basis. A manual check survives roughly one quarter before the person doing it starts skipping months. If it has become a standing reporting line, buy the cheapest tier that covers your prompt list — and our comparison of AI SEO platforms covers whether that should be a suite or a specialist. If you want the full evaluation process, the AI SEO software buying guide has it.

Two Singapore-specific notes

Prices are in US dollars and GST applies. Budget in Singapore dollars at your own FX assumption; GST has been 9% since 1 January 2024. The gap between a headline US$29 and its landed monthly cost is small, but the same gap on a US$449 plan with two extra seats is not.

Grants generally will not cover tool subscriptions. The Productivity Solutions Grant supports specific pre-approved solutions, and the business applies for and manages the grant itself; software subscriptions, advertising spend and ongoing retainers are usually not claimable. SDM is a pre-approved PSG vendor, which relates to our own qualifying solutions rather than to third-party tools. Treat the tooling line as an operating cost.

The bottom line

Free covers more of SEO than the industry’s marketing implies, and less of AI SEO than the phrase “free AI SEO tools” suggests. The technical and measurement layers are genuinely, permanently free, and the 2026 addition of a generative AI report inside Search Console means the surface that matters most in Singapore is now free to monitor at the impression level. Competitor research is where the paywall sits, deliberately and reasonably. And AI visibility monitoring has no free tier at all, because the underlying checks cost the vendor money every time they run.

The sensible sequence is therefore not “find free alternatives to the paid tools.” It is: take everything in tier one, take the freemium tiers as far as your site size allows, run a written manual prompt check monthly with its caveat stated honestly, and buy exactly one thing when a specific ceiling starts costing you decisions. That order wastes the least money and produces the fewest dashboards nobody reads.

If you would rather have the monitoring, the interpretation and the work that follows run for you, that is what our AI SEO service does. You can see how we report outcomes rather than tool screenshots in our client case studies, and the pillar guide to AI SEO in Singapore is the place to start if you are still mapping the territory.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best genuinely free AI SEO tool?

Google Search Console, and it is not close. It is first-party data, it has no commercial ceiling, and it now includes a Generative AI performance report covering AI Overviews and AI Mode. The limitation is that this report shows impressions only, with no query data and no split between the two surfaces. Everything else you use should be assembled around it.

Is there a free tool that tells me if ChatGPT mentions my brand?

Not in any sustained way. The commercial AI visibility tools offer trials rather than free plans — Otterly’s cheapest standing plan is US$29 a month for 15 prompts, Profound’s entry plan is US$99 a month billed yearly for ChatGPT only. The reason is structural: every check costs the vendor money to run against a commercial model, so there is no zero-cost version to give away. The free substitute is a written manual check of 10 to 15 fixed prompts each month.

How limited is the free version of Screaming Frog?

Only by size. Screaming Frog’s own comparison table shows the free and paid versions sharing every listed feature — scheduling, configuration, saved crawls, JavaScript rendering, crawl comparison, custom extraction, Analytics and Search Console integration. The single difference is a 500-URL crawl limit. Below that, free is the full product; above it, the licence is £199 a year.

What is the catch with Ahrefs Webmaster Tools?

It only covers websites you have verified ownership of. You get Site Audit, Site Explorer and Web Analytics free for your own domains, with 5,000 crawl credits per month per project and 1,000 backlinks or keywords visible at once. What you cannot do is look at a competitor, which is a large part of why anyone buys a backlink tool in the first place.

Can I run a whole SEO programme on free tools?

For a small Singapore business with a site under 500 pages and no direct competitive research need, genuinely yes — Search Console, GA4, Google Business Profile, Bing Webmaster Tools and Screaming Frog free will carry you a long way. What free cannot give you is competitor visibility, historical trend data at scale, or sustained AI visibility monitoring. Those three are what the money buys.

Do the free tiers of ChatGPT and Gemini count as free AI SEO tools?

They are useful for doing SEO work — drafting, classifying, summarising, first-pass analysis — and their free tiers are real. But that is a different job from measuring whether AI systems mention you. Keep the two apart when you plan a stack, or you will end up believing you have AI visibility covered when what you actually have is a writing assistant.
