ChatGPT SEO Tools: The Two Categories, and What Each Is Worth
Search for “ChatGPT SEO tools” and you get two completely different product categories presented as one list. Some of the results are software that watches ChatGPT to see whether your brand gets mentioned. The rest are ways of using ChatGPT itself to do SEO work. They solve opposite problems, they cost wildly different amounts, and confusing them is the reason so many businesses end up paying a subscription for something that does not answer their actual question.
This guide separates them properly. First, what the ChatGPT visibility trackers measure and where their numbers come from. Second, what ChatGPT is genuinely good and bad at as an SEO instrument, with the failure modes named. Third, a free sixty-minute check that tells you whether you need either. If you want the tactics for actually earning ChatGPT citations rather than the tooling around them, read how to rank on ChatGPT alongside this.
Why ChatGPT is the platform worth tracking first
Among the assistants, ChatGPT is the one that actually sends traffic. Conductor’s 2026 AEO/GEO benchmarks report, built on 13,770 domains and 3.3 billion sessions, found AI referral traffic averaging 1.08% of all sessions, with 87.4% of it coming from ChatGPT. Similarweb’s 2026 Generative AI Landscape report, covering June 2025 to May 2026, shows ChatGPT’s share of worldwide generative AI web traffic sliding from roughly 76% to around 53% as Gemini climbed to roughly 27–28% and Claude to close to 9% — but ChatGPT’s absolute visit count stayed roughly flat, and OpenAI reported around 900 million weekly active users in February 2026.
So: a shrinking share of a rapidly growing market, still comfortably the largest single assistant, and by a wide margin the biggest source of AI referrals. If you track one platform, track this one.
Keep the scale honest, though. In Singapore, StatCounter put Google at 92.46% of search referrals in July 2026. ChatGPT is the assistant that matters most, and assistants still matter less than Google’s own AI surfaces — which is why showing up in AI Overviews outranks this work in priority for most local businesses.
Category one: ChatGPT visibility trackers
These products all work the same way underneath. They hold a list of prompts, they send those prompts to ChatGPT on a schedule, and they parse the answers for your brand name and your domain. Everything else — scoring, competitor comparisons, recommendations — is built on top of that raw log.
That design has one consequence that determines whether the output is useful: a language model is not deterministic, so the same prompt can return different answers on consecutive days with nothing on your website having changed. These tools are running a survey, not reading a scoreboard, and every number they produce is a sample statistic.
Three things follow.
Sample size is the specification that matters. A plan that tracks 15 prompts once a day gives you 15 data points. One answer changing moves the headline percentage by nearly seven points. Before you believe a decimal place, ask how many samples produced it.
Mentions and citations are different metrics. Being named in an answer is not the same as your site being listed as a source. Semrush’s 2026 AI Visibility Index, built on 126 million US AI search prompts sampled from January to April 2026, found overlap between mentions and citations as low as 30% on Gemini, and measured ChatGPT averaging around 15 sources per response. A mention problem is an off-site problem; a citation problem is a content and crawlability problem. A tool that reports one blended score hides which one you have.
Locale and session state have to be controllable. If the tool samples logged in, with memory on, or from a US location, it is measuring one artificial user’s history rather than the market. Ask, and verify during a trial by running a locally-intended prompt and checking whether Singapore providers appear in the captured answer.
What the trackers genuinely cannot tell you
- How many people asked. There is no published prompt volume from any AI vendor. Every “prompt volume” number in this market is modelled from search data.
- What your customers actually saw. Sampling runs from a clean session; real users have memory and history. The gap is unclosable by design.
- Why a number moved. Model updates, competitor PR and sampling noise all look identical on a line chart.
- Revenue. Many AI-driven visits arrive with no referrer and land in Direct, and GA4’s AI Assistants channel excludes Google’s own AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic, classifying it as Organic Search instead.
If you are evaluating one of these products seriously, our guide to evaluating AI SEO software sets out a fourteen-day trial protocol and a scoring rubric. For the wider tool landscape beyond ChatGPT, see AI SEO tools explained.
Category two: ChatGPT as the SEO tool
The second meaning is the one most practitioners use daily, and it is worth being precise about where it helps. The pattern that holds across every task below: ChatGPT is strong at transforming information you supply and weak at supplying information itself.
| Task | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Clustering an exported keyword list by intent | Strong | You supply the data; the model does classification, which it is genuinely good at |
| Turning a page into passage-level answers | Strong | Rewriting to a specified structure is a transformation task |
| Drafting FAQ questions from real customer emails | Strong | Source material is yours; output is grounded |
| Generating JSON-LD schema from page content | Good, with validation | Syntax is learnable; always validate before publishing |
| Writing meta titles and descriptions at scale | Good, with editing | Fast first drafts; character limits are frequently missed |
| Summarising a competitor page you paste in | Good | Grounded in supplied text |
| Search volume and keyword difficulty | Do not use | No live access to this data; plausible numbers get invented |
| Current rankings or SERP composition | Do not use | Not a rank tracker; results are stale or fabricated |
| Citing statistics without a source you supplied | Do not use | Studies, authors and years can be confabulated convincingly |
| Publishing unedited drafts | Do not use | Fluent, generic and indistinguishable from every competitor’s output |
The hallucination risk in the bottom half of that table is not theoretical and it is not solved. The specific failure to watch for in SEO work is a fabricated citation: a named study, a named researcher and a year, presented with complete confidence, that does not exist. Any statistic that reaches a published page must be traced to a primary source you have opened yourself. In our own process, an unverifiable figure gets deleted rather than softened — which is also, incidentally, the behaviour that earns AI citations, since the GEO research found adding genuine statistics and credible sources to be the strongest single visibility lever.
Custom GPTs and Projects: where they earn their keep
The feature worth using is not the chat box, it is persistence. A custom GPT or a Project holds instructions and reference files across sessions, so you stop re-explaining your context every time.
Three that repay the setup effort for a Singapore business:
- A brand-voice rewriter. Load your style guide, three published pages you consider on-brand, and your list of banned phrases. Use it only for rewriting existing copy to structure, never for generating claims.
- A schema generator. Load your schema conventions and two validated examples from your own site. Paste page content, get JSON-LD, then validate it. Our guide to schema markup for Singapore websites covers which types are worth implementing — and note that the evidence for schema improving AI citations specifically is weak, so implement it for rich results rather than for AI visibility.
- A brief builder. Load your content brief template, your internal linking rules and your keyword export. Feed it a target term, get a structured brief that a writer can work from.
What does not work: custom GPTs that promise keyword research or rank tracking. The persistence layer does not give the model data access it never had.
The free sixty-minute ChatGPT visibility check
Before spending anything, run this. It takes about an hour and it tells you which of the two categories you actually need.
Read the result the way the chart does. Zero mentions and zero links means the wider web barely names you, and no tracker will change that — the work is reviews, directories, industry pages and genuine third-party coverage. Mentions without links means the web names you but your pages are not being used as sources, which is a content structure and crawl access problem. Both present, and moving is the only case where paying for monitoring is a reasonable next step, because now you have something to protect and a baseline to protect it against.
One implementation note that catches people out: make sure you are not blocking OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. That is OpenAI’s retrieval crawler — the one that fetches pages to answer live questions and sends referral traffic back. It is a separate decision from GPTBot, which collects content for model training. Blocking the training crawler is a legitimate business choice. Blocking the retrieval crawler removes you from the answers you are trying to appear in.
Your prompt set is the instrument — design it properly
Whether you are running the free check or paying for a tracker, the prompt set determines the result far more than the software does. A badly built set produces flattering numbers that mean nothing. Four rules cover most of it.
Half your prompts must not contain your brand name. Asking “is Acme Consulting any good” will almost always surface Acme Consulting. That measures nothing. The prompts that matter are the ones a buyer types before they know you exist: “who can help a Singapore SME with X”, “what should I look for when choosing a Y”, “best approach to Z for a small business”.
Include the comparison prompts you would rather not read. “Alternatives to [your brand]” and “[competitor] vs [your brand]” tell you how the model frames you against the field. These are frequently the most commercially useful prompts in the set and the most often omitted.
Write them in customer language, not keyword language. People type full questions into assistants, often with context and constraints attached — budget, timeline, industry, location. A prompt set built from a keyword export will systematically under-represent how the surface is actually used.
Add local modifiers deliberately, then check they work. Around a quarter of a Singapore-focused set should carry an explicit local signal. If the answers that come back name only US or UK providers, either the prompt is not localised enough or your tool is sampling from the wrong locale — and it is worth finding out which before you draw conclusions from a quarter’s data.
Then freeze the set. Changing prompts between months destroys comparability, which is the only property that makes the measurement worth anything. Add new prompts as a separate tracked group rather than editing the original twenty.
What to pay, and when
For category two, the ceiling is a consumer subscription — roughly USD 20 a month for a paid ChatGPT plan, and the free tier handles a surprising amount of transformation work. This is not where budgets go wrong.
For category one, published entry pricing in this space starts around USD 29 a month; Otterly’s Lite plan covers 15 tracked prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot, with 100-prompt and 400-prompt tiers at USD 189 and USD 489. Suite add-ons cost considerably more in total — Ahrefs requires a base plan from USD 129 a month with Brand Radar AI indexes from USD 199 on top. Against a typical Singapore SME marketing budget, that is a material share of spend allocated to measurement rather than to the work being measured.
The sequencing that we would defend: run the free check for two or three months first, fix whichever problem it reveals, and only then consider paying for monitoring. Software is worth buying when you have something to lose.
The short answer
“ChatGPT SEO tools” covers two unrelated things. Visibility trackers sample ChatGPT on a schedule to see whether you are mentioned or cited; they are surveys, not scoreboards, and their usefulness depends entirely on sample size, locale control and whether they separate mentions from citations. ChatGPT itself is a strong transformation tool — clustering, rewriting, structuring, drafting — and an unreliable source of facts, volumes or rankings, with fabricated citations the specific failure to guard against. Most Singapore businesses need neither product yet. Run the free sixty-minute check, find out whether your problem is presence or extractability, fix that, and buy monitoring only once there is something worth monitoring.

Frequently asked questions
What are ChatGPT SEO tools?
The term covers two different products. The first is visibility tracking software that sends a fixed set of prompts to ChatGPT on a schedule and records whether your brand is mentioned and your site cited. The second is ChatGPT itself used as a working tool for SEO tasks such as keyword clustering, content restructuring, schema drafting and metadata writing. They solve different problems and should be budgeted separately.
Can ChatGPT do keyword research?
Only partially, and never for the numbers. It is good at generating topic ideas, grouping an exported keyword list by search intent, and surfacing the questions implied by a topic. It has no live access to search volume or keyword difficulty and will produce plausible-looking figures that are invented. Always pair it with a real keyword tool for the data, and see our guide to keyword research in Singapore for the underlying method.
Is a ChatGPT visibility tracker worth paying for?
Only once you have visibility to protect. If a manual check of twenty buyer prompts shows you are never mentioned, the problem is off-site presence and content, and no tracker will fix it. Entry-level tracking starts around USD 29 a month for roughly 15 prompts, which is a small sample; treat the resulting percentages as directional rather than precise.
How do I check whether ChatGPT mentions my business, for free?
Write twenty questions a real buyer would type, run them in a logged-out browser session with chat memory disabled, and record three things per question: whether you were mentioned, whether your site was linked, and which competitor was named first. Total mentions and links separately, and repeat on the same date each month. It takes about an hour and produces a usable baseline.
Should I block GPTBot in robots.txt?
That is a legitimate business decision, but keep the two crawlers separate. GPTBot collects content for model training and sends nothing back. OAI-SearchBot retrieves pages to answer live questions and does send referral traffic. Blocking the retrieval crawler removes you from the ChatGPT answers you are trying to appear in, so most businesses that want AI visibility should leave it allowed.
Will ChatGPT-written content hurt my SEO?
The risk is not the tool, it is unedited output. Fluent, generic copy that repeats what every competitor says gives no reason to rank or to be cited. Use it for transformation — restructuring, clustering, drafting from material you supply — and add the things models cannot: original data, first-hand experience, verified sources and a point of view. Never publish a statistic that has not been traced to a primary source.
